Unfiltered optical linear polarization observations of the X-ray transient A0538-66 during the period March 5-14, 1981 are presented. An outburst was observed, with a magnitude difference of about 1.5, peaking on March 10 (UT). The preoutburst polarization was only marginally detected at 0.28 + or - 0.11%, but increased sharply to 1.8 + or - 0.1% coincident with the optical outburst.
