The data on wide binaries provided by Bahcall and Soneira (1981) are used to augment the data from other surveys of binaries. All these data are interpreted using a dynamical theory for the behavior of wide binaries that experience encounters with field stars. The sharp drop in binary frequency beyond 20,000 AU is a consequence of encounters, and the shape of the drop-off follows from the theory.
