Two NO density profiles measured at the diminishing phase of solar cycle 21 using the filter radiometers on the sounding rockets S310.12 and S310.14 are analyzed. Peak densities were obtained at 105-110 km and are 9 x 10 to the 7th and 7 x 10 to the 7th/cu cm, respectively. The relation between the thermospheric NO and solar activity is examined. A one-dimensional photochemical-diffusive model is utilized to simulate the NO density data and the observations are compared with the model calculations. It is observed that the model correctly simulates the peak NO densities for the range of variable solar activities; however, at altitudes above 140 km the measured NO profiles for moderate and high activities are much smaller than those produced by the model. The effect of meridional transport on the correlation between the observed and modeled data is investigated.
