Radio observations at 327 MHz and 5 GHz of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi during its 1985 outbursts are presented. These observations are used as pointers to conditions in the remnant at a time about 40 days after outburst. From a comparison with theoretical expressions for synchrotron self-absorption, the Razin effect and two different cases of synchrotron emission and free-free absorption, the latter effect is favoured; synchrotron radiating electrons and absorbing material are found to be intimately mixed. A 5 GHz 'flare' is analysed in terms of a region of magnetic flux reconnection, by analogy with solar flares. Only a small region of the remnant - a few per cent of the radius in linear dimensions - is involved in this 'flare'.
