Recent studies on the early history of earth's crust, ocean and atmosphere are considered, with emphasis on the impact of space-based observations on evolutionary scenarios. Recent observations suggest that the major fraction of volatiles emanating from the earth are likely to be recirculated contaminants from the ocean and atmosphere introduced into the crust and upper mantle by subduction, and lines of evidence for accretional degassing are discussed. The impact of accretion scenarios on the primordial ocean-atmosphere system are considered. The in situ measurements of other planetary atmospheres indicate that primordial atmospheres consist of the volatiles occluded in the solid planetesimal material from which the planets accreted, represented, presumably, by meteorites. The impact of the timing of the course of the evolution of the sun is also discussed.
