An analysis of observational data on the local interstellar medium shows that the sun is located in a warm low-density H I region characterized by a low degree of ionization at the edge of the local H I cloud several tens of parsecs in size and shaped like a horseshoe encompassing the sun. The shape of the local cloud is apparently due to cloud compression by the shock wave at the edge of the local cavern which has been blown by stellar wind and supernova explosions in the Scorpio-Centaurus association. The local cavern is apparently undergoing slow expansion between the phases of a more rapid expansion under the influence of a powerful stellar wind and supernova-type explosions of medium-mass stars.
