From a sample of the coldest IRAS objects having fluxes characteristic of dust emission from outflowing circumstellar shells from evolved stars, about 40 were searched for CO J = 1-0 emission and 9 were detected as likely evolved stars. At least two of these - HD 161796 and SAO 163075 - are associated with visible stars at high galactic latitude having intermediate spectral types. 89 Her was also observed, and detected in CO emission. These stars are discussed in terms of the likelihood that they represent a stage of rapid evolution between the asymptotic giant branch and planetary nebulae. Very few such objects were previously known. Several of the detected stars are either bipolar nebulae, or have stopped losing mass at a high rate some time ago, so that there is now little dust close to the star. An analysis of the mass loss rates of dust and gas is presented.
