A two-dimensional UBV study of three early-type galaxies in the neighborhood of M87, to aid in better understanding of several problems associated with such objects, is presented. The galaxies studied are NGC 4476, NGC 4478, and NGC 44868. The study is based on high-resolution photographic material obtained at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope and completed by photoelectric and spectroscopic data. The luminosity profile of NGC 4476 follows an r to the 1/4 law. This galaxy should be considered another dusty elliptical. At variance with previous results, the profile of NGC 4486B does not appear severely truncated, and may reasonably follow either an r to the 1/4 law or a King (1966) model. The profile of NGC 4478 appears truncated. It would be a new object of the compact elliptical class. The three galaxies show no trend for isophotal elongation outwards, but instead a trend for circularity. It is suggested that this is another characteristic of low-mass interacting ellipticals.
