Japanese mission to orbit Mars, launched in July 1998. Initially placed into a gravity assist orbit around the Earth and Moon. Carries instruments provided by Canada, Sweden, Germany and the United States. Intended to map the planet's surface, study the Martian atmosphere and the interaction of Mars with the solar wind. Arrival at Mars delayed until at least December 2003 after an engine malfunct...
