X-Ray Observations, Supernova Remnants

Scientific paper

The power of XMM-Newton and Chandra to provide a three-dimensional view of the kinematics, structure and physical conditions in SNR will add profoundly to our knowledge of these objects. I have presented only a small portion of the results that have emerged in the first few years; there is much more to come. I am particularly excited about the prospects for achieving three-dimensional imaging by combining direct images, spatially resolved Doppler measurements and, where possible, proper motion studies. One goal here is to gain new insights into the kinematics of the ejecta and the dynamics of their interaction with the surrounding medium. We also need to explain the apparent asymmetries in the structure of younger SNRs, about which we presently know very little. We are sure to learn much more about the shock phenomena by mapping the ionization stages of various ions and by refining techniques like those applied by Hughes et al. (2000) to estimate the energy channelled into cosmic rays. Elemental distributions will tell us about the degree of mixing in the explosion, and elemental abundances will constrain the nature of the progenitor and the models of nucleosynthesis. Altogether, the prospects for major advances in our knowledge of all these phenomena have never been better.
