Spectra integrated along the line-of-sight are the main source of information about the history of galaxies. The spectral energy distribution, and the strength of selected spectral features allow a first diagnostics of the age and metallicity of stellar systems. The next step of refinement is to analyze the shape of the absorption lines.
In the recent years, on one side high S/N observations of galaxies and star clusters at medium spectral resolution (R~1000-5000) became available. On the other side, models of stellar populations gained in precision. We are presenting here the state-of-the art in the spectroscopic analysis of stellar populations.
In the center of galaxies, the spectra are the composition of several components: A bulge and a disk; an old stellar population, plus a star formation region or a young population, plus a NLR, a BLR of an active nucleus. We are describing how these composite spectra may be analyzed.
