The Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences was organized in 1966 as a managing institution for operating the 6 m mirror optical reflector BTA (Bolshoj Azimuthal Telescope) and the 600 m aperture radio telescope RATAN-600.
