Large-scale variations in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) are studied using its measurements by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft. To reveal the sector structure, an algorithm for estimating trends of long time series is proposed. The algorithm makes it possible to determine the sectors as well as to trace the tendencies in changes in the “long-lived” IMF structures for various degrees of initial data smoothing.
