English astronomer, born near Durham, clock-maker and mathematics teacher, wrote in 1750 a curiously argued book in which he suggested that the Milky Way was a disk-like system of stars with the solar system near the center. Wright suggested that nebulae were star systems similar to the Milky Way, but very far away. Conjectured that the gap in the planets between Mars and Jupiter had been cleared...
