Born in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland), invented (or at least developed) `prosthaphaeresis', a formalism of trigonometry that allowed one to multiply and divide trigonometric functions by the easier process of adding and subtracting instead (in the manner of logarithms).
