Greek Stoic philosopher born in Apamea, Syria, settled at Rhodes, and
from the rather imprecise observation that Canopus just rose above the
horizon at Rhodes, but was 7 degrees 30 min above the horizon at
Alexandria, he determined a too-low value for the circumference of the
Earth....
