English astronomer, an assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, he went with JEREMIAH DIXON to the Cape of Good Hope to observe the transit of Venus in 1761. Dixon and Mason were engaged to survey the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania, and reached a point 224 miles west of the Delaware River, but stopped work due to hostile Indians.
