Born in Arnhem, Netherlands, became professor of mathematical physics at Leiden University. Nobel prizewinner 1902, jointly with PIETER ZEEMAN, for his mathematical theory of the electron demonstrating the effect of a strong magnetic field on wavelength of the light produced by an atom (this was before the discovery of the electron).
