Solar astronomer, born in Paris, founded and became head of the Astrophysical Observatory at Meudon, observed the bright line spectrum of a solar prominence in the total eclipse of 1868. The brightness of the emission lines suggested to him that they should be visible even outside an eclipse, and so they were (see also LOCKYER).
