Celestial mechanician, born in Lusigny-sur-Barse, France, died at sea
(near Cherbourg) after just two years as director of the Paris
Observatory. Studied lunar theory and worked out formulae that gave the
longitude, latitude and parallax of the Moon as infinite series. The
work was accurate but impractical as the series converged slowly....
