While at the Royal Greenwich Observatory became the first astronomer both to discover a comet and to calculate its orbit (Comet Candy 1960), became director of the Perth Observatory, which he supervised into measurements of minor planets and comets, including a vast number of positions for Halley's Comet in 1986....
