Astronomer, born in Westphalia, Germany, worked at the Hamburg Observatory and moved to California in 1931. He and FRITZ ZWICKY proposed in 1934 that supernovae could produce cosmic rays and neutron stars. Identifying it as the supernova of 1054, Baade made extensive studies of the Crab Nebula.
