Hercules X-1 (Her X-1) is a pulsating x-ray source detected with the first x-ray satellite, UHURU, in 1971. It is an accreting X-RAY BINARY system consisting of a NEUTRON STAR that rotates every 1.24 s while orbiting a `normal' stellar companion every 1.7 days; the misalignment of the magnetic axis relative to the rotation axis results in a distinctive pulse profile in x-rays.
