In 1917, Ellerman discovered short-lived, intense brightenings at tiny (<1 arcsec) points in the lower solar CHROMOSPHERE. A typical Ellerman bomb lasts less than 10 min. Its spectrum is characterized by very broad emission wings on the hydrogen Balmer lines. On a photographic negative, the pattern of a bomb's emission resembles a mustache or whisker.
