Miranda is the smallest of URANUS' five major satellites and one of the most unusual objects in the SOLAR SYSTEM. Miranda is such a small world, only about 470 kilometers (300 miles) in diameter, that it was not discovered until 1948 by the American astronomer GERARD P KUIPER. Very little more could be learned about Miranda until the VOYAGER 2 spacecraft flew through the Uranian system in 1986...
