Saturn's tenuous E ring is the biggest planetary ring in the solar system, encompassing the icy moons Enceladus, Thetys, Dione, and Rhea. The ring is composed of dust particles between 0.3 and 3 microns in diameter, which is a uniquely narrow distribution. During a close flyby of Enceladus, Cassini's Cosmic Dust Analyser (CDA) measured a strong local source of dust grains >2; microns located in the geologically active south pole region. There was also an indication that many fresh dust particles are produced in the same manner as dust clouds around the Galilean satellites of Jupiter: ejecta dust of a broad size range, generated by collisions of micrometeoroids of either interplanetary or ring origin with the moon's surface, are injected into the moon's orbit. Here we report about in-situ investigations of Saturn's E ring with the CDA detector. We furthermore discuss the implications of our findings on the ring sources and E-ring evolution.
