An observational procedure designed to eliminate certain difficulties in taking accurate photographs of the moon against the stellar background is used to develop an absolute selenodetic system. Mounting of a lunar plate in a special plate holder in a large horizontal telescope permits separate images of the moon and the stars to be recorded simultaneously. The principles used in compiling lists of craters from space and earth photographs and the classification of the craters are discussed.
