An approximate equation of radiative transfer and the equations for the source functions are derived for the vibrational-rotational bands of linear molecules in a plane-stratified semiinfinite atmosphere with no induced emission and with departures from LTE occurring in the vibrational degrees of freedom. The model assumes no overlapping of band lines and a Boltzmann distribution in the rotational states. Band radiative transfer in an optically homogeneous medium is treated as a generalization of the integral equation of the source function for radiative transfer in a line with an additional integration over the rotational quantum number j. Applications to the 4.3 and 15 micron CO2 bands and the 4.7 micron CO band in the atmospheres of the Earth, Venus, and Mars as well as to molecular bands in cold stars are discussed.
