Using the Schwarzschild-Schuster model, expressions are derived for the integral characteristics and contours of the absorption lines of a magnetic star situated within the linear portion of the growth curve. The influence of the star's rotation and of incoherent scattering of radiation on the broadening of the line components is taken into account. The influence of the type of line formation model on the line characteristics is studied, using an oblique rotator with a dipole magnetic field as an example. It is suggested that magnetic broadening may be the governing mechanism of absorption line broadening in magnetic white dwarfs.
