Developments leading to the discovery of the expansion of the universe are considered along with the significance of the Friedmann model for a description of cosmological conditions. The determination of the Hubble constant involves the measurement of the radial velocities of a sufficiently large number of objects and the determination of the distances of these objects. Questions of astronomical distance determinations are discussed, giving attention to a multistage process in the case of extragalactic distances.
