Scientific paper

Current theories for the explosion of novae and its relation to the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle are reviewed. The double-star process of passage of cold, hydrogen-rich gas from the large star to hot, CNO-rich, dense gas on the white dwarf, followed by thermonuclear reaction between hydrogen and CNO nuclei, is described. Enormous luminosity augmentation and nucleosynthesis are both explained by this model.
