The development of slope winds in the circular basin Hellas can generate an anticyclone nearly at the summer solstice of the southern hemisphere, and at that time only. The velocity of wind at the periphery of the anticyclone is sufficient for initiation of a planetwide dust storm. This mechanism may explain the occurrence of global dust storms at perihelion and a preference of their beginning in the vicinity of Hellas.
