An electron microprobe study of chemical zoning in individual spinel grains whose growth spanned a great part of the period of cooling of lunar basaltic liquids allows reconstruction of the crystallization sequence of mare basalts. Application of this technique to Apollo 12 and 15 olivine basalts, pigeonite basalts, and one ilmenite basalt led to delineation of three major compositional variation trends characterized by coupled oxide variations in zoned lunar spinels.
