Near infrared speckle observations have shown Z CMa to be extended in E-W direction. The full width at half maximum is about 0.10 arcsec (115 AE) at 1.65 μm, and apparently decreases with increasing wavelength as does the fractional brightness of the extended component. The width is less by about a factor of two in N-S direction. Although the object is not fully resolved, which makes an unambiguous interpretation difficult, the discussion of the data suggests that the infrared radiation is scattered light coming from a dusty disk seen approximately edge-on. Then a high albedo of the particles and a special geometry appear to be required to fit the considerable infrared scattering cross-sections implied in such a picture to the moderate extinction observed in the visible.
