Z And is the prototypical SYMBIOTIC STAR. Discovered as a mundane M-type VARIABLE STAR with a 2 mag range in visual brightness, Z And rose to prominence in the 1920s when JOHN STANLEY PLASKETT reported a peculiar class A spectrum with strong nebular lines on spectra near maximum light.
