Near-infrared speckel observations show the premain sequence star XZ Tau to be double with a separation of 0.30 arcmin + or - 0.02 arcmin at P.A. 154 deg + or - 3 deg corresponding to 48 AU. While both components are equally bright at 1.2 microns, most of the near-infrared radiation longward of 1.2 microns arises from the very red northern component. Neither of the two components were found to be extended and it is shown that both of them are of stellar nature. It is suggested that the southern component coincides with the visible star and that the northern one constitutes an infrared companion which is more luminous than the optical component.
