The properties of super-Eddington accreting neutron stars, known as Z sources, are poorly understood. The problems include the physical interpretation of the three spectral branches of the "Z" and the connection with neutron stars accreting at lower accretion rates, known as atoll sources. XTE J1701-462 is the first X-ray transient (2006-2007) that exhibits Z source characteristics, providing a unique opportunity to solve these problems. The evolution of the Z pattern with decreasing luminosity revolutionizes our understanding of how the accretion rate is related to the Z-branches. We also follow the spectral evolution from a Z source to an atoll source, confirming the idea that the two classes are distinguished by the mass accretion rate. Finally, our spectral analyses provide a suggestion of how local Eddington limits may come into play for sources, with further suggestions of the physical changes that occur along each Z-branch.
