Giant radio galaxies, which extend to more than 1 Mpc in size, pose a difficult problem. Their radio lobes must span regions of very different gas density and pressure, and yet they maintain relatively uniform widths over their entire structures. This is difficult to achieve unless the lobes are propagating through a medium which is more extended, and more uniform, than the gas in a cluster of galaxies, but still has substantial density. We propose XMM imaging of a carefully-chosen sample of giant radio galaxies to detect X-ray emission from this confining gas, and so characterise this unusual and cosmologically important medium.
