The category of supernova remnants known as mixed-morphology, or thermal composite, remnants shows a center-filled morphology that cannot be understood in the standard picture of supernova evolution. We propose to use XMM to study the morphology and spectral variations of the supernova remnant G359.1-0.5. Our primary goal is to constrain the mechanisms of X-ray production from the center of this remnant, identifying whether thermal conduction, cloudlet evaporation, metallicity gradients or other effects are primarily responsible for the observed center-filled morphology. We will also determine whether G359.1-0.5 is located at the same distance as the pulsar known as the Mouse by measuring the absorption column to the remnant.
