In a survey of the Shapley super-cluster (SC) we have detected diffuse X-ray emission from 37 cluster candidates without previous X-ray detection. 23 were previously optically known SC members; the other candidates were never detected before in any waveband: 4 of them were confirmed clusters by follow-up multi-band optical imaging. We propose to observe a subsample of these clusters with XMM. This will enhance previous studies of the Shapley to significantly fainter X-ray limits. We will reanalyse the density and mass properties of the SC, which will be used in different collapse models to draw evolutionary scenarios of the super-structure. We will also study the properties of clusters which we will compare to those of clusters embedded in much lower density regions.
