We propose XMM-Newton observations of 6 representative regions of the SMC, with well constrained stellar populations of ages 10Myr to 0.5Gyr. For the first time we will observe the X-ray source populations in regions of varying stellar content, down to a limiting luminosity of 2x10^{33} erg/s (20 times deeper than ROSAT) in a young star-forming galaxy. We will classify the detected sources based on their optical counterparts, while based on X-ray spectra and timing we will identify X-ray binary pulsars. We will use these results to investigate the connection between stellar and XRB populations. These observations will provide a picture of the faint XRB populations and will complement similar studies of other galaxies where these populations cannot be observed.
