We propose to observe two galaxies from a sample of nearby, isolated ellipticals for which we have extensive optical and near-IR data. Our proposed targets are unique in that unlike other ellipticals, they are not surrounded by a population of dwarf galaxies. We will combine the proposed XMM-Newton observations with our existing data to: (1) determine the relationship, if any, between the X-ray halo mass and optical galaxy mass, (2) compare the properties of isolated ellipticals with those of ellipticals in denser environments, and (3) search for direct evidence that ellipticals can evolve from the merger of poor groups. These observations will help constrain models for the formation of elliptical galaxies.
