In models for the nearly-grazing encounter between the spiral galaxies NGC 2207/IC 2163, the two gas disks push shocks at several hundred km/s into each other across a several kpc front. Evidence for this disk scraping is seen in the radio continuum image. XMM observations of NGC 2207/IC 2163 are requested (1) to confirm the above scenario by detecting diffuse X-ray bremsstrahlung from the shock regions in the outer parts of the companion sides of these galaxies and (2) to determine the number, location, and nature of discrete X-ray sources. The results will show the early consequences of a grazing encounter.
