We propose EPIC observations of 14 ULIRGs for which high-quality optical/IR imaging and spectroscopic data exist. Based on previous experience on XMM spectra of ULIRGs, we ask for 20 ksec exposure for each source. The collected spectra are expected of sufficiently good quality as to allow identification of the emission processes related to the starburst (which dominate below 5 keV) and to a possible heavily-obscured AGN (which would dominate above 5 keV). Such new data, supplementing previous XMM data (obtained mostly by us), would complete the XMM spectral survey of a complete sample of ULIRGs, improving our database spectral statistics by a factor of 2, and allowing us to settle the core issue of ULIRG studies, i.e. the "starburst vs. AGN controversy".
