We propose XMM-Newton observations of a sample of 15 optically red quasars, discovered by the 2dF Quasar Survey. This sample is drawn from the 10k catalogue, and is selected in order to study a previously unexplored region in the color space of quasars. The observations we propose are a fundamental step forward in the comprehension of the X-ray properties of quasars, since for the first time it is possible to study objects different from the classical, UV-excess selected quasars, from a well defined mother sample. This allows to investigate the debated issue of the relation between optical and X-ray classification, and also to directly estimate the fraction of objects with peculiar X-ray properties.
