We propose to observe two regions in the Vela supernova remnant shell, which, together with an EPIC GT observation we have already analyzed, will allow us to sample at high spatial resolution (less then 0.1 pc) the downstream plasma from the main shock rim directly interacting with the undisturbed ISM to an inner region, located ~7 pc toward the SNR center. The selected regions contains prototypical representations of shock-cloud interactions, and they are therefore ideal candidates for the assessment of the nature of the X-ray emission in this (and other) middle-aged supernova remnant shells.
