We propose five 10 ksec observations of Cyg X-1. We will use the RGS to study the orbital variations of the focused stellar wind of Cyg X-1 using absorption edge and line measurements for the five random orbital phases of the observations, and complement these with optical spectroscopy. By modifying the low energy threshold of the EPIC-pn to 2.2keV, we are able to accomodate the telemetry limitations of XMM and observe the source in the timing mode of EPIC pn. This change allows us to obtain a very high signal to noise CCD-resolution spectrum of Cyg X-1, to measure energy resolved power spectra, time lags, and other timing quantities out to 100Hz, and interpret them with emission models for black holes.
