X-ray and radio images show that the Galactic Center has inflated bipolar shells that span from below b-22 to +80 deg lat. We propose to study two of these enormous structures with XMM-Newton/EPIC mosaics: one just adjacent to the Galactic Center, the other 1.5 kpc out where its caustics are sharp in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We will map X-ray spectra (hence T gradients) and absorption along the walls. We will compare these to thermal radio and warm dust images to distinguish between an active or a fossil wind-blown structure, and to search for filamentary flow instabilities. By tightening constraints on mass entrainment, this study of by far the nearest example would clarify the impact of the ubiquitous superwind phenomenon on its host galaxy.
