The Orion region provides the nearest example of a giant molecular cloud where both low and high-mass stars are actively forming. One of the most spectacular star-forming regions in Orion is the embedded IR cluster near the reflection nebula NGC 2071. It contains more than 100 IR sources but is so far unstudied in X-rays. A dense subgroup of a dozen IR sources designated NGC 2071-IR shows a dazzling array of activity including a powerful bipolar outflow, radio jets, rings and disks, masers and ultracompact HII regions around massive YSOs, HH objects, and T Tauri stars. We propose to undertake the first sensitive X-ray study of NGC 2071 to obtain an X-ray census of the IR cluster and search for X-rays from massive protostars and shocked outflows in the NGC 2071-IR subgroup.
