Gamma Cas, Xmm-Newton Proposal 02012201

gamma Cas is a well-known Be star with unique X-ray properties. A previously obtained Chandra HETGS spectrum exhibits lines from a broad range of temperatures, suggesting the emission is composed of multiple components and possible signatures of the influence of the surrounding Be disk. An issue of compelling interest is whether the X-rays are emitted from near this Be star or elsewhere (e.g. from an accreting degenerate secondary). We propose to exploit the high effective areas of the EPIC and RGS spectromenters on board XMM to obtain additional information concerning the properties of X-ray emitting plasmas and the circumsource absorbing materials of gamma Cas.
